The first part of this anthology is a selection of Maupassant’s stories about his experiences as a traveler. The second is a collection of writings depicting his innermost feelings. Fear, confusion, apprehension, and internal turmoil seem to be the constant emotions in his universe. His reflections expose a reality of inner dysfunction in which nothing is clear, all spiritual reasoning appears confounding, and a breakdown resulting from mental illness seems imminent.
