A gorgeously illustrated guide to the fae, filled with intriguing and well-researched explorations of folklore from around the world.

In Ireland, the sinisterleannán sídhesuck the life from artists and poets in exchange for muse-like inspiration. In Japan, the elusivezashiki-warashibestow prosperity on the human families whose homes they share. From thedvorovoiof Russia to the Braziliancurupira, Malaysia’sorang bunianto English brownies, and themoksin tongbŏpof Korea, the world is full of magical creatures who assist, haunt, and dazzle humankind.

This illustrated compendium written by expert folklorists invites us to enter the realm of the fairy folk. Sections dedicated to fairies of the home, nature, romance, and more emphasize what fairies do and what they mean to people around the world. Each chapter illustrates a different way of seeing fairies—a way they’ve been used to explain our world and ourselves.

This is a fascinating reference for anyone who has ever been enchanted by fairies—or would like to be.

Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman are award-winning folklorists, teachers, and writers with a combined 26 years in higher education and over one hundred publications. They both earned their PhDs in English and Folklore from The Ohio State University in 2018, with dissertations exploring the intersection of folklore and literature in nineteenth-century Britain, and are now regular contributors to Enchanted Living Magazine (formerly Faerie Magazine) and The Fairy Tale Magazine. Together, they founded The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic, where they teach creative souls how to re-enchant their lives through folklore and fairy tales.
