When I picked her up at the shelter, she kissed me all the way home. She was anxious at first, pacing back and forth, room to room, but that quickly gave way, and this four year old chow chow rescue named Winnie settled in. Soon this willful, protective, loyal creature was running the house. I know she saw me as her staff. She decided what we were going to do and when we were going to do it. I was happy to have her in charge because she added such value to my life. Each and every night for ten years she took her position in the doorway to my bedroom, facing out, watching the front door for any intruder. She was prepared to defend me with her life.
