Volume I provides the first and final texts ofPaulinecarefully annotated with emphasis on the literary background of the poem rather than its supposedly authobiographical reference. It also includes the manuscript ofParacelsusin the Forster Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum printed here for the first time.

Jack and Smith have not only provided more accurate texts than have up to now been available but they have also supplemented them with 'all available' information about the genesis and composition of each poem and explanatory notes that help clarify 'difficult' passages, of which, as we know there are many in Browning. --Choice
