This book argues that the last four decades have seen profound and important changes in the nature and social location of religion, and that those changes are best understood when cast against the associated rise of consumerism and neoliberalism.
Fran?ois Gauthier is Professor of Religious Studies in the Department of Social Science at the University of Friborg, Switzerland. His research focuses on religious, political, cultural, and social changes in contemporary consumer and market societies. He has edited many books and authored many articles in these fields including the forthcoming Routledge Handbook on Religion in Global Society (with Jayeel Cornelio Serrano, Tuomas Martikainen, and Linda Woodhead), as well as Religion in Consumer Society (2013) and Religion in the Neoliberal Age (2013) (both with Tuomas Martikainen).

These transformations are often misunderstood and underestimated, namely because the study of religion remains dependent on the secularisation paradigm which can no longerló-
