A pregnant woman's fight for survival in 1960s Sweden.

Pregnant, abandoned, and homeless, Maureen battles to survive a Swedish winter. Help arrives in the form of Netta, a mysterious woman with a veiled past. Facing deportation, Maureen learns who her real friends are, especially when she's linked to a suspected criminal.

Meanwhile, in Australia, Maureens family scrambles to help her as her father's health declines. Lillian, Maureen's mother, uses her resourcefulness to tackle family dramas at home.Out of Edenexplores women's resilience in a time when independence was threatened. For readers of historical fiction, women's fiction, and family sagas.

"Out of Edenis an engaging story of a resilient mother and daughter who defy the conventions of their era. Cheryl Adam is a natural storyteller with a comic gift who succeeds in capturing the feel of the 1960s and its uneasy transition between the stifling conformity of postwar Australia and the move into the new freedoms of the 1970s. It also features that rare thing, a lively and unsentimental portrait of a truly good woman." —Amanda Lohrey, Novelist and author ofThe Labyrinth
AustralianCheryl Adamspent her childhood in rural Australia where her love of storytelling began. In adulthood, she travelled widely and lived overseas including in Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia), Kenya, South Africa, Norway, Jersey, England, and Sweden. She has been evicted, kidnapped, abandoned, made homeless, and discriminated against in her foreign adventures and this helped develop her deep empathy for the plight of immigrant women, as for Lillian in this story. In the 1960s, she was deported from Kenya and arrived as an unwanted guest in Sweden.
Cheryl Adam writes great unputdownable fiction with a great narrative thread, challenges, social issues and unexpected humour laced with fear.
