Age level 7 to 11; Key Stage 2; US grade level 3 and up. This is book 2 in the children's chapter book series The Billy Books, and provides a fun way to teach children an important moral lesson about pride. In the story, Billy is nasty to his best friend Ant, and they have a row. Ant goes away confused at his friends behaviour, and decides to find a new friend. When Billy sees how easily Ant finds someone else to play with, he feels abandoned, becomes annoyed and convinces himself its not his doing. Though later Billy regrets his unkind words, he has to face the consequences of his actions. His ego entices him to go and find his own new friends to show Ant he doesn't need him. Billy befriends some older boys, but things dont go well for him. He is forced to make unsavoury choices which lead him to reflect on how he originally behaved towards Ant and the lost friendship. His pride stops him apologising, even though it feels a bit uncomfortable, hes feeling confident. Hell show Ant he doesn't need his friendship! Is Billy the sort of person to have as a friend? Will it be possible for Billy and Ant to be mates again? How can they overcome their differences?
