Journey in the Wild reflects some of my innermost struggles with suffering from motor neuron disease. It was devastating news to friends and my family. I am just an ordinary person like you, never been ill in my life apart from usual cold and seasonal flu attacks. Following the diagnosis, like any normal person, I went through periods of lows and highs, through stages of frustration, negotiation, denials, and acceptance. This experience makes true the saying Never say never ; our existence and Shalom is by the grace of God. I was riding high in my career as a general practitioner, and my motto is I am on top and still rising. I have never had any serious health problem or ever been hospitalized before. I have always felt so strong both mentally and physically that I believe it will take an elephant to knock me down! The diagnosis knocked the breath out of me, and life was never the same again as I know it. While not in pain, I watch myself slowly deteriorate and dependent on others. It is very painful asking others to assist me with doing mundane activities such as lifting, assistance with dressing, cooking, and of course, my outings become severely limited. I could not think ahead too much, but trust in the Lord makes all the difference. I have never been afraid of death that does not mean I do not value life; just that medical training and personal experiences have humbled me. Moreover, I realized that life is feeble as described in Psalm 103:15-16 The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; 16 the wind blows over it, and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. Of course, there were occasions when I found living frustrating, but the trust in God keeps me going. I live in hope of divine healing, but in the meanwhile, I find strength in Psalm 23:4: Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
