This is a special edition of excerpts from the award-winning full edition. The full edition of Before They Were Heroes at King's Mountain received a 2011 Willie Parker Peace History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians.
This North Carolina/Tennessee excerpted edition shares that part of the story taking place in historic North Carolina (including today's East Tennessee), but also the two-week campaign of the Overmountain Men and the gathering of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia militia in pursuit of British Major Patrick Ferguson and his Loyalist army. The North Carolina/Tennessee edition does include the battle itself as well as the seldom-told story of the two weeks after the battle when the prisoners were marched to the Moravian town of Bethabara.
This North Carolina/Tennessee excerpted edition will be of interest to those who only want part of the story, perhaps in their geographic region. (It does not include the backstory in Virginia or South Carolina from 1774 to 1780.) Or, it may be suitable as a gift to get someone interested in the larger story of the American Revolution in the South, especially the story commemorated along the 330-mile Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, a unit of the National Park Service.
This excepted edition does not contain the six pages of bibliography or the 30 pages of end notes.
This excerpt does put the story on the landscape, providing information that enables readers to visit the sites in North Carolina and Tennessee. For those readers interested in the full story, a good arm-chair read, and the documented history, please read the full edition.
