Ossian Bingley Hart, is the the biography of the Unionist and principal founder of the Republican Party in Florida, and Reconstruction-era governor of that state; who was a frontier settler, legislator, prosecutor, civic leader, civil rights supporter, entrepreneur, jurist, and politician. The biography traces Hart's life from childhood in Jacksonville, where his father was one of the largest slaveholders in the state, which led to him being an ardent advocate for civil rights, through his service as a volunteer soldier in the Second Seminole War, his education in South Carolina, and the dawn of his legal and political career on Florida's Atlantic frontier, to his election as governor in 1872 and his premature death sixteen months later.
