From a cross-disciplinary and conceptual perspective this book discusses the political solutions of constitutional patriotism, republicanism and liberal nationalism to cultural conflict. It places these debates in the context of real national traditions, where all civic language inevitably also reflects 'culture'.Foreword; P.Mouritsen & K.E.J?rgensen Political Responses to Cultural Conflict: Reflections on the Ambiguities of the Civic Turn; P.Mouritsen Symbolic Power and Cultural Differences: A Power Model of Political Solutions to Cultural Differences; K.Eder Making Citizens on the Genealogy of Citizenship Ceremonies; T.Damsholt The Politics of Discourse towards Islam and Muslim Communities in Europe; R.Zapata-Barrero & I.Qasem Constitutional or Agonistic Patriotism? 'There is much to commend in this well-organized book. Considering the number of contributors, the editors have done a fine job. The importance of this volume is to be found in its incorporation of recent developments in empirical theory.' - Eric Taylor Woods, Nations and Nationalism
