Many may not know about the history of the Hmong people, who surfaced near China centuries ago and were forced to migrate and assimilate into countries in Europe and the United States starting in the seventieth century. Yet what the Hmong people may be known for presently is for their grapples among their people between accepting their original belief in animism and choosing to convert to Christianity. Author Long Khang is a former animist who is now a Christian and understands firsthand the contradiction of beliefs that flow in animism. His new book, Hmong Animism: A Christian Perspective offers a comparative religious study on the two belief systems, explaining animists' beliefs in reincarnation, shamanism and spirits within objects in comparison to Christians' beliefs in God and the Savior Jesus Christ. Long's hope is for the book to educate readers, especially Hmong animists, to embrace Christianity and stop persecuting Hmong Christians.
