The Scythian Neapolis is the `largest and most investigated barbarian fortress of the northern Black Sea region', lying on a high plateau in the Crimean mountains. This study presents the historical evolution of the site, outlining five major periods in its occupancy and development from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD. From a group of farmsteads to a major settlement, then a royal fortress with a palace and temple, to a more significant fortress of some scale and, finally, to an agrarian centre for the local area. Yorij Zaytsev describes how the site changed over time drawing on evidence from recent excavations which is largely unavailable in any European language. The Scythian Neapolis is the `largest and most investigated barbarian fortress of the northern Black Sea region', lying on a high plateau in the Crimean mountains.
